Programmable Logic Controller & Remote Terminal Unit (PLC & RTU)
PLC
A programmable logic controller (PLC) is an industrial solid-state computer that monitors a variety of analog and digital inputs and outputs, processes signals and coverts data into a usable format.
All of the PLC’s components and functions are centered around the controller, which is programmed using ladder logic to complete a specific task or make logic-based decisions for automated processes or machines.
PLCs have been an integral part of factory automation and industrial process control for decades. They can be used in a wide array of more localized applications, ranging from controlling simple lighting functions to performing more complex automation tasks required by environmental systems or chemical processing plants.
RTU
Remote terminal units (RTUs) are more advanced versions of PLCs. An RTU is sophisticated and intelligent enough to control multiple automated processes without machine operator intervention or input from a master controller. An RTU can also monitor a field’s analog and digital parameters through connected devices and systems.
The unit collects data, codes the data into a usable format, and sends it back to a central station. RTUs can be a great asset for many industrial facilities that span large geographic locations, like power plants and water treatment plants.
